STANDARD-BASED ENGLISH LANGUAGE CURRICULUM (SBELC) or Dokumen Standard Kurikulum & Pentaksiran (DSKP) is a document that incorporates the mapping of the English Language Content and Learning Standards as well as pedagogical approaches which are aligned with the CEFR.
learn more about SBELCThe curriculum focuses on four language skills which are listening, reading, speaking and writing. Both listening and reading skills are known as input for the students while speaking and writing skills are known as the output from the students. The curriculum aims to prepare the students for real life communication. Literature components are also included in the curriculum to enhance language skills and develop cultural awareness.
The curriculum is aligned with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The aim is to bring Malaysia’s English education closer to international standards. The framework uses six reference levels which are A1, A2, B1, B2, C1 and C2 to evaluate students' English proficiency. A1 refers to beginner level and C2 refers to proficiency level.
The curriculum is organized
around four broad themes which are People and Culture, Health and
Environment, Science and Technology, Consumerism and Financial
Awareness. Based on my understanding, the four themes aim to educate students the importance of the themes and prepare them for the real world.
People
and Culture:
Students learn about different cultures around the world to foster respect and understanding.
Health and Environment:
Students learn about personal well-being such as the importance of a balanced lifestyle and be aware of environmental issues such as pollution and climate change.
Science and Technology:
Students learn the impact of technology on society, including digital literacy and responsible use of technology.
Consumerism and Financial Awareness:
Students learn about money management and consumer rights.
The curriculum aims to integrate 21st century skills such as critical thinking, problem solving, collaboration and digital literacy. For example, teachers are encouraged to use technology and interactive activities to engage students in the class. Students are given Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) questions to stimulate their creativity and critical thinking.
